Amino acids are the building blocks of protein (e.g. muscle tissue). There are 20 amino acids found in muscle tissue. Of these, 9 are essential, meaning they must be obtained through the diet. Whereas, the other 11 are termed non-essential as they can be made within the body (from other amino acids).
Three of the essential amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine, are collectively called branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) due to their chemical structure. BCAAs make up 1/3 of muscle tissue and are unique as they 're oxidized (burned) for energy during exercise. BCAAs also have the advantage of getting into muscle tissue faster than standard protein. They feed muscles directly, bypassing the liver (unlike all other amino acids). What 's more, leucine has been shown to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (muscle building).
All of this is especially important for people following a diet program. When you diet, you can burn through (lose) muscle during intense exercise. Less muscle contributes to a lower metabolism. Consuming BCAAs can help you keep that muscle.
