Pycnogenol is a branded supplement made from French maritime pine bark extract. It has been studied for a variety of uses, including its potential benefits for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cardiovascular health, and lung function.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study found that pycnogenol improved attention and reduced hyperactivity in children with ADHD (1). Additionally, Pycnogenol has been shown to have antioxidant properties that may help support healthy endothelial cell function, lower blood pressure in people with hypertension, and reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

Research has also investigated the potential benefits of Pycnogenol for asthma symptoms, with some studies suggesting that it may help improve lung function and reduce inflammation in the airways (2).

To date, there is no evidence to suggest that Pycnogenol causes liver damage in humans when taken at recommended doses. Pycnogenol has been extensively studied in clinical trials and in animal studies, and no evidence of liver toxicity has been reported. In fact, some studies suggest that Pycnogenol may have liver-protective effects.

In rare cases, some individuals may be allergic to pine bark and experience symptoms such as itching, hives, or difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking Pycnogenol and seek medical attention immediately.

Additionally, because Pycnogenol may have blood-thinning effects, it is important to use caution when taking it with other blood-thinning medications or supplements, as it may increase the risk of bleeding. If you are taking any medications or have a medical condition, it is recommended to talk to a healthcare professional before taking Pycnogenol to ensure its safety and efficacy for your individual needs.

Pycnogenol may benefit the skin by protecting it from oxidative stress, stimulating the production of collagen, and providing anti-inflammatory effects.
